THIS IS NOT ART

An exhibition by Costa Rican artist Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has sparked outrage across the world.

Last year, Habacuc tied up a starving dog from the street and placed it on show at an exhibition while gallery patrons walked by seemingly unaffected.

It is alleged Habacuc paid children to catch an abandoned dog for the exhibition. He then displayed the dog by tying it up on a short rope. It is alleged the dog was left with no food or water and died a few days later.

Habacuc claimed he was attempting to prove that those who saw the suffering of dogs on the streets walk by without helping. It seems as if gallery patrons do this too.

He says he fed the dog and that it did not die but ran away. Again, we have been unable to confirm this.

How anyone can exhibit a dog in these conditions or walk past a dog so clearly close to death just defies belief. It is outrageous.

Equally outrageous is that the Central American Biennial exhibition considers this cruelty as art and now Habacuc has been invited to repeat his barbaric exhibition at the Biennial of 2008 in Honduras.
